Without doubt one of the most innovative electric bassists in the world. Colin Hodgkinson started his professional career with a band that was the opening act on a Del Shannon/Beatles tour in 1963.
He joined Alexis Korner in the late sixties and worked with him for almost twenty years. At the same time he was also a founder member of the group Backdoor. It was in that group that he developed his formidable style of bass-playing. Because the instrument line-up was saxophone, bass and drums , he started to play chords, lead lines and solos on the bass as well as the normal single note bass lines. All the techniques he has developed, he uses in his unique renditions of traditional blues, many made famous by the legendary Robert Johnson.
He's toured extensively, and played in many all-star R & B line-ups, featuring artistes such as Brian Auger, Chris Farlowe, Spencer Davis, the late Tony Ashton and other names from the sixties. In 1999 he was invited by Bill Wyman to be the opening act on his Rhythm Kings tour with a 30 minute solo set and in 2001 Gary Moore asked him to do the same thing for him, on his UK. tour. He also spent two years living in New York whilst playing with Jan Hammer, who wrote the theme music for the well known TV. series "Miami Vice".
During his career, Colin has done countless recording sessions for such names as Mick Jagger,Jeff Beck, Jan Hammer, James Young, Neal Schon and Alexis Korner to name a few. He has been a permanent member of the Spencer Davis Group for many years & before the formation of the BBQ, he had also been appearing at various festivals with the British Allstar Blues Band.
